When dryer is plugged in and I turn timer to "dry" then push start button, nothing happens…no humming, nothing at all (except that I do hear the timer switch motor running). When I open dryer door, the relay in push-to-start button clicks/releases (so the push to start button is receiving voltage and appears to work ok.
Took dryer apart, tested push-to-start button, door switch, thermal fuse, heating cycle thermostat (next to thermal fuse), and thermostats on the electric heating element, and all have continuity.
I disassembled motor starter relay switch (on motor) and cleaned minor buildup on contacts from arcing. I figured this could be the problem, so I reassembled dryer…no change…dryer still doesn’t start.
Took apart again…tested motor using "test harness" from 120 v wall outlet directly to black and white leads on motor start switch, and dryer motor runs fine.
Next step, checked continuity from "hot" connections on terminal block to "hot" side of timer switch and start switch, and in all sections of the "hot" circuit down to the "hot" terminal on motor, and all appears ok.
Then, I think I found problem…when timer switch is in "on, dry" position, I DO NOT GET CONTINUITY from neutral (white wire) terminal on dryer motor back to the neutral (white) terminal on main power cord terminal block. There are no breaks in any wires (all have continuity). But there is NO CONTINUITY from the neutral terminal (with white wire) on the timer switch to the neutral terminal on the main terminal block.
This last test appears to indicate faulty timer switch. Does this make sense? or am I missing something?
