Kenmore Series 80 Washer Won't Spin

Hey all,

I apologize for posting on what appears to be a common problem, but I’ve done quite a bit of research on the issue over the weekend and am unable to find a conclusive answer. Everything else works ok; it agitates and drains. Hoever, during the spin cycle, the washer stops spinning. I tested the lid switch and pulled the coupler. The switch is ok, and the coupler is intact but worn. Niether plastic piece of the coupler fits tight; they each slide off with relatively ease. At the point when the tub stops spinning, I can here a noise that sounds like something is separating. The tub stops spinning, but I can hear the motor continue to turn. When I pull the motor, the entire coupler assembly comes out; I think it’s always on the motor shaft (has been the last two times I’ve pulled it for sure). I reinstall and everything works fine until the next spin cycle. Within 2 to 3 minutes into the spin cycle, the tub stops spinning. I’ve done this (pulled and reinstalled) several times.

My question is, is the problem that the coupler is loose and worn, or is the issue in either the gearcase or motor?

Thanks in advance!
