Admiral Washer Spins but Drains Inconsistently

I have an Admiral top loader from 1995 that still works great except for one problem…when it gets to the spin cycle, it spins fine, but will never drain completely during the normal cycle. Sometimes it is near full, sometimes 1/2 full or less. It is inconsistent.

After the cycle is over, if we move the control knob around to the spin cycle portion and restart it, it always drains just fine (flows well like there is no restriction). That is consistent.

Any ideas?

Interesting problem, not sure about a solution since the logical answer is something blocking the drain, but since it drains completely after you re start it that is not the case.

Can you check and see if it does this in all wash cycles?

Let us know and in the meantime I will do some research and thinking and see if I can come up with something.

My wife just told me that sometimes it doesn’t drain completely when it is reset manually on just the spin mode.

Also…

I just took the back off and removed the hose from the washer to the sink, the pump, and the hose from the tub to the pump. All are free of clogs. I rinsed the pump out and it spins smoothly. I also can reach through the hose fitting on the tub with my finger and there’s nothing blocking that also. That’s when I stopped to check this forum again.

Not sure what to do next. I guess I’ll reassemble and try the other modes as you suggest.

Ok, good, let us know what you find out

We think the gentle cycle is doing the same thing.

I also took the steel tub out and checked between it and the plastic tub. There is definitely nothing restricting the output.

A thought…this is a mechanically driven pump (belt drive). The belt looks a bit glazed. I wonder if it is slipping. I tried to figure out how the belt tension is maintained but I’m not clear. The motor seems loose but then I think this might be by-design as there is a spring the pushes on it. It seems to weak, though.

How is the tension in the belt set? Is the motor supposed to be mounted firm?

I cannot get your model number to come up, but it sounds like your pump may not be functioning correctly. Try replacing the belt, and there should be an adjustment on the tension. If that does not fix the problem replacing the pump may be the next option.

Take a look at your model number and see if you posted it correctly.

Thanks

The model # is correct. I double checked it.

I got the number off of the belt and ordered a replacement from this website.

There are 3 slots in the motor base and three screws in the slots with large, white plastic bushings on them. They are all loose such that they can slide in their slots. I just talked to a local parts guy who says the motor should be free to slide and that the motor reaction torque naturally tightens the belt. He concurred with your idea of changing the belt. Do you think he is incorrect and that these screws should be tightened down such that it doesn’t slide?

I’ll try the new belt in a few days and let you know…

Yeah, I think the motor should be like that, it sorta serves as a clutch.

See what happens with the new belt, and adjust the tension if you think you need to.

How do I adjust the tension?

I am flying a little blind here since I cannot get your model number to produce, but you indicated this is a belt driven pump. There may be a tensioner with a spring, with several holes that you can put the spring into t0 adjust tension.

The new belt came quick!

I just took off the old belt, cleaned off all the pulleys with alcohol and installed the new belt. There was a lot of black dust from the old belt. The first load of clothes just ran thru and it worked fine.

We’ll keep an eye on it. If you don’t hear back from me all is well.

THANKS!!!

The new belt arrived quick and I installed it last night.

2 loads are washed with no problems; it drains fine now.

Before I installed the belt, I cleaned off all three pulleys with alcohol. There was a nasty black dust from the old belt.

Thanks!!!

Oven quit working and would only come on when you pushed and held the oven button the entire time.I was told it was the clock assembly,so I replaced the clock assembly. The replacement came as a complete assembly of clock, control board, touch pad, etc. After installing and setting clock,I tested the oven and it worked fine until it heated up to temperature and I pushed the button to turn it off.It then started beeping and showing an f1 code which I looked up on here as a control board/touchpad/clock failure. Is there a reset code or something to enter to clear this or could I have gotten a bad clock assembly from factory? Thank you in advance for any assistance in this matter.
