Agitator is sluggish

This is a second hand machine we purchased 6 months ago. Worked just fine until 2 weeks ago.

Agitator is VERY sluggish. I am able to freely move the belt and in turn the pulley that moves the agitator. I am easily able to hold both the pulley and the agitator and move them independently of each other; that is hold the pulley and move the agitator or hold the agitator and move the pulley. Doesn’t seem to me that this should be possible. I’m thinking something inside the transmission is wrong.

I think I am able to provide photos of the ‘upper’ transmission and ‘lower’ pulley. Otherwise, here are a couple of links. I’ve circled the positions in red that I’m able to turn independently.

HI.

First check if the motor glides on the plate freely, so the tension on the belt is full.
Next remove the agitator from the transmission shaft and check the splines.
If those thinks checks out OK, then most likely the transmissions is bad.

Thank you. Post the results.

Simon.

Thanks for the direction.

Motor glides freely. Belt has full tension and looks fine.

Have removed agitator from transmission shaft. All splines look fine.

Guess this leaves me with the worst case scenario. Is it worthy to repair? Can I start to take it apart and find something obvious to repair?

Thanks!!

Hi.

I don’t believe the transmission parts are sold separately.
The transmission is kind of expensive plus you need new seal kit.
If you will decide to replace it please provide the serial number.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=46634

Thank you.

Simon.

Thanks so much for your guidance on this situation. $235 for the transmission plus $92 seal kit. UUGH! Paid $150 for the used washer. Looks like new ones are about $450.

I’m no mathematical genius but this one is easy… New washer. Sure am grateful for your help in making this decision.

Thanks,
Ed

You are welcome.
