Agitator issues...HELP

The agitator just barely moves during a wash cycle. This is the case with or without a load in it. However, when I use my hand and push downward on the top of the agitator during a wash cycle, it begins to agitate, but only as long as I am puting pressure down on the top of the agitator.

I don’t know how the mechanism works, but it’s as if a clutch is not getting enough friction to engage. Could there be a bolt on the shaft of the agitator that is loose, thereby causing it to slip?

Thanks in advance.

I am assuming that since you did not mention it, the machine otherwise works correctly. You need to check out your agitator and see if there is a problem there.

Here is a link that will show you how to take off your agitator and check it out. It is possible you need to replace the "dogs" and the link will show you how.

Good luck, let us know what you find out.

Yes, the machine works well otherwise. After doing a bit of research, I was wrong in saying the agitator wasn’t working right, it’s the "clothes mover", the upper part of the agitator that moves independantly of the lower agitator, that is having the symtoms that I described at the onset of this thread.

With that in mind, what would you suggest I start looking for a problem?

Thanks again, and for such a quick response.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I’ve been crazy busy. Anyway, I did as you recommended, and BAM!!! It works! No problems.

Thanks a million!!!

Great, glad that fixed it and thanks for the update.

I would like to remove the top of my Maytag dryer to see what is making all the noise. How do I go about that?
