I have a whirlpool washer LA8800xsw2 with an agitator problem. I replaced the dogs and it worked for a while but wore them out again. I noticed the center flat portion in the upper section (sits on the thrust spacer and holds the cam and dogs centered) is wearing thin and the top portion has a lot of play wiggling side to side. I am replacing the top mover agitator part to take care of the wore out portion, new dogs and cam, thrust spacer, etc. But my main question is, how big should the plastic ring be on the lower agitator base where the upper portion fits around (lip about 1/3 the way down the column on part#9 of the agitator parts diagram) ? should that fit the upper portion fairly close so there isn’t much play to wiggle? My ring only sticks maybe 1/16" or so more than the rest of the tube of the lower portion. If that is supposed to be a closer fit, then my ring may be wore down and the upper agitator will be able to rock around and side to side which would wear it out again. The lower agitator spline is good and it fits on the shaft snuggly so I don’t want to buy another lower portion if I don’t need to but don’t want the upper parts wearing out pre-maturely if the lower portion is actually wore out and does need replacing.

Hello,
Have you replaced just the agitator dogs or you used the agitator repair kit?
Have you tighten the agitator bolt (#8 at the diagram)?
gene.
I only replaced the dogs originally but did tighten the bolt. The "platform" that the bolt goes through to tighten the upper agitator to the shaft coming through the lower base agitator is what was wore through on some of the edges and I’m assuming partly due to wear and play in the fit of the agitator on top over the lower portion. I have replaced the complete top agitator, the thrust spacer sleeve, dogs and cam (complete repair kit). That’s when putting it back together noticed there is still a lot of room for the top agitator to "wobble" on the lower portion - which to me could result in wearing out that "platform" I mentioned above that happened to the old one. I really just wanted to know if its normal to have quite a bit of wobble (if you push the top agitator to the side) or should it fit more snugly over the lower base portion? Or is it likely the plastic ring that sticks out on the column of the lower base (all one piece) is wore down some allowing the sloppy fit? If I knew how much that ring should protrude from the column (how much it sticks out?, or diameter of the "ring" vs the column, etc) I would be able to determine if mine is OK or if I need to replace the lower base agitator - Don’t want to buy another base just to find out mine is OK and the loose fit is normal.
Thanks
If you installed all parts included in the agitator repair kit correctly, I don’t think it will be any problems.
