Bake Element won't turn on

I’ve started experiencing troubles getting my oven to heat to proper temperature. I did some trouble shooting: sensor is good, Broil element has continuity as does Bake element. Wires to bake element seem okay. Am I looking at a new control panel? :frowning:

What kind of ‘troublesexactly??

Does the oven temperature ever increase??

Does the bake element ever glow red?

Does the broil element ever glow red?

Will the surface elements glow red if turned on high?

A more thorough problem description might help us to offer possible suggestions.
The bake element does not glow red.
The bake element should glow red whenever it is on. If it isn’t, that is likely why the oven is heating slowly.

Is the bake element heating at all?

I pulled it out and checked it for continuity and it seems fine.
If it is not heating at all but the element is definitely good, it is not receiving power for some reason. That could be due to a failure of the wiring leading to it or the control not powering it.

You could also check the range’s wiring diagram to see if there is any other components (safety thermostat, fuse, etc.) in the circuit to just the bake element which might have failed but there isn’t usually.

If the bake element is getting warm but just not glowing red, it could be shorted to ground (see the following link) or only being powered by 120 volts for some reason (eg. wiring or control problem) instead of the 240 volts it should be receiving.

Interestingly the bake element started to warm up initially, but a series of unusual clicks from the control panel occurred and then it failed to warm up at all after that (Broil element continued to warm).

I deduced that it may be a relay in the control panel that was acting up so I by-passed the relay with cables and the bake element immediately started to glow red. So its a new control panel I guess (unless they sell the relays separate).

It sounds like a problem in the electronic control, yes… but not the control panel which is only the front covering of the control housing.

I’m afraid not and with GE, you’re lucky the whole control is even still available. They discontinue them more often than any other appliance manufacturer I’ve come across.

Let us know how you make out.
