Hi POTENTATE

Most likely the problem is a shorted out control board which has to be replaced.

Good luck.

My Kenmore washer is about 30 years old. A year ago, I noticed that the clothes were dripping wet after the delicate and cotton cycles. I just began using the perma prest cycle exclusively. Now the clothes are wet after that cycle as well - but only sometimes. When it happens, I just manually set the spin cycle, and it works. Just yesterday, this manual setting stopped working. So the clothes are still dripping wet and I get a a burnt smell to boot.

I would like to fix this machine. Any suggestions about which part may need replacing?

Hi Chris,

There is 99% chance that the motor has to be replaced. It has two different windings for each speed and one of them gone bad.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool washer http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?diagram_id=122413&&model_id=502666

Thanks again. Im gonna order the motor, im determined to fix this. Is there any thing else i should order with the motor since it will be apart? like the rubber grommet or motor coupling? Im pretty good with fixing anything, but is there any tricks to replacing this? Should anything be lubed while im at it? Thanks

I would recommend to replace the motor coupling at the same time.

There is nothing to lubricate and this is not too difficult to do yourself ([AP3963893](http://www.repairave.com/washerrepair_wpl_motorcoupling.asp"]especially with the complete instructions[/URL]).

I would also pull the cover off the timer and check for burnt contacts, if so, you will need a new timer also, lots of times a bad timer will burn out the motor. If bad, you are looking at a big bill for parts, like $180, maybe not worth fixing.

I did change the timer because i thought it was skipping some cycles, but i think it was me tring to peek in. So in a way i guess its better i did change it! I did order the parts and ill post the out come! Hopfully it works cause the one my wife wants next is like 1000 bucks!

I got the new motor and coupling in! We did 3 loads and so far no extra soap or water at the end of the cycle!! Close seem almost dry! Its definitly spinning faster in the middle and on high speed spin. If anything changes ill post again. Thanks for the help

I’m glad you were able to fix it.

ordered part #AP3137864,crossed to # 8184718. new board on right side where touch pad cables plug in ,P5 on new board is turned backwards, can twist cable and install, but looks like it will not last long twisted this short, but will not come out of control lock when this is installed. with old board installed all of right side of display will not work .then it will lock out and read a code of F2-E1…what next and will the new board with plug turned backwards…larry griggs

I changed board because when I removed power from board for about 5 min. it would start back to cooking, but the buttons on right side would not work, this has been goig on for 4 or 5 months. the wife is telling me to repair or replace. I have not been able to get access so far to a service manual…larry griggs

I’ve had pretty good success doing this unplug the ribbon from the control unit and take just an ordinary pencil eraser and clean the end of the ribbon with the eraser plug it back in see if that helps if thats the style of ribbon connector you have in other words it wouldn’t have a plastic end on it just a bare ribbon

For the past few days we have been having a problem with our dryer drying a load of laundry. It is less than a year old & we just don’t know if it’s the heating element or something else? If anyone knows what this might be - please let us know. Thanks.

Thanks,

Disconnect the unit from the vent.
Do a load and see if it now runs OK.
If OK, then it is your vent system
If NG then I would call the place you bought it, it should be under warranty.

If you do not want lint in the house, take a pair of pantyhose, put one leg into the other and attach this to the dryers output. Leave enough room behind the unit so it can blow out like a windsock. This will also let you check heat and air flow output.

One more thing to check would be your lint screen especially if you use liquid fabric softener. It can coat the screen and drastically reduce air flow.
