Cannot separate upper and lower agitator

I need to replace the dogs in my agitator. The problem is I can’t separate the upper agitator from the lower agitator. I have taken the agitator assembly out of the machine and tried standing on the base and lifting the upper off and even tried with both my wife and I lifting, all to no avail. It is totally stuck on there. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Soak the agitator in very hot water for a while and then try again.

Thanks Eric, but no luck. It still won’t budge. I even tried putting a board on the lip and hammering on it to see if that would break it free. Any other ideas?

Sorry, the hot water soak usually works.

From previous post on same subject:

"I tried it today. Soaked both pieces in a big sink with HOT water for 10 minutes. They pulled apart with very little effort after months of trying to figure out what special tool would be required to get the job done. duh!"

On my Whirlpool Model WTW5540SQ0, I had to use a Dremel with a #115 HS cutter to remove the melted plastic tabs on top of the cam. Just enough so the slots in the cam are completely visible. The top and bottom agitator should then pull apart. If you have the full cam repair kit, it won’t matter if you slightly damage the cam since you will be replacing it.

That sounds pretty stuck! If you still haven’t been able to free the part, I would call a local laundry equipment service company to assess the machine further and suggest possible solutions to the problem!
