Clothes Go 'round & 'round + Now No Spin & Blows Fuse

Well, we’ve lasted since 11/09’s washer repair completed here…

These last couple of weeks, the washing machine’s been limping along because

  1. it started going in only going in (1) direction;

    and, there was no "agitation".

<<<ODD NOTE:
The washing machine still SOUNDS LIKE it is "agitating" ~ You know, the sah-WOOM-woom-SAH, back & forth "machine sound" over & over ~ >>>

Still, we’re an all-girl household, so the laundry was at least as clean as a good handwashing: We were content to "let it be" since we don’t really "get our clothes dirty".

But today, of a sudden the washer blew the fuse!

Hmmm…

:o :o :o
The only "diagnostic" I’m able to share is that the motor "hums" when in "spin" - including in the spin-to-empty-for-rinse cycle.
:o :o :o

It only makes the usual hum of "I’m "on" & all is well with the world" sound;

it doesn’t make any "unusual/special/peculiar" noise(s) at all.

it still fills and goes through the "1-way wash cycle" - even now it still will do that.

But, within scant seconds of entering the drain & spin after washing, when only the "hum" is heard, _>>>CLICK!<<< the fuse blows.

We re-set the fuse about 12 times, but it was no use;
:o :o :o
we had to hand bale the laundry water.
:o :o :o

We used a special yellow hose (15’?) just for draining the water heater’s tank every Spring.

I used our flower watering can with a long narrow spout to fill the hose with clean water while another gal held the other end up.
When the hose was full of water, I plunged one end into the washing machine tub, being careful to hold the open end just barely above the bottom & flat.
The other gal sat her end outside the laundryroom doorway & down (2) steps, to drain outside, into a flower bed.

It took maybe 10-15mins to drain the washing machine tub’s water this way.

To us, it sure seemed better than baling it out a cup at a time & making drips on the floor, etc.

No muss, no fuss! YES!

OK!
So, then we revisited the removal of the fabric softener dispenser & agitator, same as in 11/2009 here.

We’re tickled pink to report there’s NO HAIR tangled in there this time & the "gunk factor" was negligible! YES!

Still, I used a small flat screwdriver to clear any bits of grit from that metal central "hub" thingie with all the bolts & the axel, or whatever the main central piece is, etc ~ It was minimal "gunk & grit" - mostly seemed like fabric softener residue this time. We tidied it all up, again, "like-new".

:o :o :o
Then again, last time was after about 15 years
:o :o :o

and this time was after only (1) year! So,…

OK!
So, there being no aparent problem inside the tub, I thought maybe the washing machine is getting "tired", for lack of a technical term…

My thinking was with the load of water at a medium setting with (1) top + (1) towel + (1) pair of jeans now removed AND the water all removed, MAYBE the washer would have the "strength" to go ahead and spin ~
In other words:
I was thinking maybe the washer was now too old for more than a small load of water and 1-2 items…
So, we plugged the washer and dryer back in and pulled out the timer control knob to reactivate the machine.

:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:
We’re sad to report:
:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:
The washing machine made the SAME EXACT HUM as when the water & laundry load was still in it.

So, we pushed the control knob back in immediately (BEFORE the fuse could blow, again!) and unplugged the washer & dryer, again.

THEN, we removed those (2) flat-headed screws at the bottom front, which let us "pop out" the "front panel".

That’s where we are at now ~

We see the big black drum thingie that holds the wash tub + the big black hose in the lower right front corner inside there (the "cabinet?) ~

BUT, we do NOT see the "belts"…

Isn’t this supposed to be a "belt replacement" pair of issues? (Clothes go 1-way/don’t "agitate" + tub no longer spins nor drains)???

___PLEASE: Advise!

Thank you in advance for assisting us, again, with our NEW washing machine repair need(s)!

:o :o :o
The (3) Ses FULL of SUCCESSES (but with a broken washing machine, again)
:o :o :o

Hi Susana

I have two difficulties with your post, one is that I cannot get your model number to come up and two, I cannot really follow very well what you are saying. However, since it appears your machine is over 15 years old and that there are several of you in the household, why not get everyone to pitch in a little bit of cash and treat yourself to a new machine. Sounds like you have gotten about as much as you are going to get out of this one, and a lot more than most folks.

SidFink,

First, thank you for replying to our post!

Second, the machine is Speed Queen AWM593L2

Third, your timing is perfect!

Martin, from Lucky Appliances, (same as with the Nov. 2009 new belt + part repair, also listed here), just left & I logged back in to see if there might be a reply to substantiate when he said during this visit.
TAH-DAH! There it was: Your post! YES!

:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:
According to Martin, 16 years was quite the run for our dearly departed family member, relegated to the laundry room with the dryer, water heater and not much else all these years.
16 years was, apparently, quite the accomplishment for what amounted to solitary confinement with multiple daily visits from the (3) of us, non-stop, day & night, including countless nights of A) overnight "soaking" to, occasionally, get stains out of a floor rug, etc & B) overnight "soaking" in Downy to, according to advice from an older friend of the family, "get the scent to really sink in, lasting a week, or longer", for linens, etc.
16 years of loyal service, only interrupted, Nov. 2009, when the disease that took it’s life this week, reared its ugly head: Old Age/Natural Causes.
Yes, Speedie the Speed Queen, is no more. Her motor, finally, gave out, according to Martin - and, we infer you to imply in your response, too.
Always to be remembered, soon to be replaced, Speedie the Speen Queen is no more.
:frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

I will now prepare a new post of Martin’s suggestions/comments upon pronounced Speedie as "dead". Hopefully, there will be some replies to it, to help us make a well-informed decision about the post-mortem decisions / loose ends we need to tidy up around here now that Speedie is no longer with us.

Thanks for replying to our post! Want to make it 2:2? We’re forming a new post in 3, 2, 1…
