Defrost Timer

I have a Maytag french door refrigerator that is acting erratic. It started when the fridge stop cooling. The fan was still running but the compressor would not come on. I checked the capacitor and relay and both are fine. I searched all over for a defrost timer to see if it was stuck in defrost mode. I could not find one which leads me to think that it is electronic. There is a large circuit board (about 6" x 8") on the back left side at about waist level. I put everything back together and plugged it back in and it started working again.
Any ideas of what the problem might be?

Sorry, It looks like I typed in the number wrong. It is MFI2568AES. I appreciate any help you can offer. It started working after I had it unplugged and plugged back in again for about a day. This morning when I got up is was 63 degrees in the fridge.

That model has a service diagnostic test built into the control board. You’ll need your tech sheet for the correct steps and component tests. Look behind the lower kick plate on the right side. It may be taped to the bottom of the machine in an envelope. It may also be inside the control housing.

There’s nothing behind the kickplate and I didn’t see anything behind the cover for the control board. Is it possible that it is behind the control board? Is there anyway to get one online?

I found the tech sheet taped under the front right corner under the fridge but it has no instructions on how to get into the service mode. I checked the control board and there are no switches. I assume that it is probably a combination of button pushes and/or holds on the front panel but I have know clue where to start. I’ve tried several combinations but nothing.
Any ideas?

Which fan? the condenser/compressor fan and/or the evaporator/freezer fan.

If the condenser fan was running then it is probably a compressor or start/overload device problem. As the compressor is wired in parallel with the fan so when one is on the other should also be on.

Ok, I found a service manual online that gave me instructions on how to get into the service mode. The only thing I’ve tried so far is to set the defrost mode to factory default. That didn’t work. What puzzles me is that after the fridge is unplugged for awhile the compressor will start working and it will cool down to normal temerature. Sometime overnight it stops working because when I get up in the morning the fan is running but not the compressor and it is over 60 degrees in the fridge compartment. It seems to me that if it were a themostat or sensor that has failed that it would never start to begin with or run forever. I hate to spend the money for a new control board without knowing that that is the fix but I’m not sure what to test. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I didn’t actually check to see what fan was running. If it were and overload problem it seems like it would cool down and restart after a certain amount of time, at least before it got that hot inside.

Remove the bail wire holding the relay/overload to the compressor. Remove the two wire connector from the relay/overload. Pull the relay/overload straight off the compressor. Shake the device and see if you notice any rattling sound that would indicate the relay/overload needs to be replaced. This is a common problem found mostly on Whirlpool/ Kenmore/ KitchenAid refrigerators. Most of the defective relays/overloads were installed on Embraco compressors. Use an ohmmeter set on the lowest scale to check the relay from the two terminals on the front of the case. The meter should indicate a resistance of between 3 and 26 ohms. A defective relay will measure zero (0) ohms (shorted) or infinite resistance (open).

I have a Maytag refrigerator (MFI2568AES) that I am trying to replace the high voltage board. I have gone through 2 new boards and neither of them will program. I’ve used the included instructions and have the correct code from inside the fridge. I have tried the same programming sequence with the old board and it works (obviously it already has the code in it). I did check the software revisions of the new board and the old board. The old board was rev 10. The new board was rev 7. Has anyone seen this problem before?

There’s one step in the instructions that isn’t very clear. When you go to save or enter the code, you need to push and hold that button until the display shows it saved.
