We bought this from a neighbor who was moving but they said it worked fine. When we turn on the dryer there is a loud rubbing sound as the drum spins.

Run your fingers along the inside of the drum seal at the front and back of the drum, to see if anything is between the drum and the frame. Bra wires are famous for this.
Be careful just in case the object is sharp.
If the above is OK then it could be a lot of things.
At the top of the list would be worn front drum support glides.
