Dryer element will not shut off

My Ge Dryer Will Not Shut Off The Element When The Door Is Opened. The Motor Stops And The Drum Light Works. The Only Way The The Element Will Shut Off Is To Turn The Timer Off. Should The Element Not Shut Off When The Dryer Door Is Open? What Is Wrong?

Here are our parts.

It is a GE so I am not able to get your much tech info as they like to keep everything a secret.

Yes the element should turn off when the motor stops as there is a centrifugal switch on the motor that supplies power to the element. It is closed when the motor gets close to operating speed.

This site has some basic info on GE’s

Take a look at #28 it will give you an idea of how the dryer may be wired.
Also take a look in the uits control console. They like to store wiring diagrams in there.

Sounds like you have a grounded element.
Check the heating coil or coils.
Unplug the unit and both wires to the coil.
Check it with a meter, should be around 12 to 25 ohms, probably around 20.
Then check from each side of the coil to the case/frame, both should be infinite ohms (open). If not the coil may have sagged or broken and is touching the case. This can cause it to run on when the motor is off.
