the heating element glows brightly with door shut and switches off. We were getting some squeaking with heavy loads when we first started using it. Last night we got rattling noises in the back and the above heating element (we assume) problem. thanks to all.

The first thing to fix is the element being on when it should not be on.
Note that if the element is not grounded then you will have to also replace the motor as the centrifugal switch on the motor should kill power to the elemet when the motor is not running.
As far as the ratting etc. you will have to open the unit up to find the cause.
Note that a common problem on these units is the rear drum support/bearing.
