Duet washer start button is 'loose'

My whirlpool washer’s ‘hold to START’ button is floppy and not springing back. The START button works normally 80% of the time, but sometimes has to be ‘massaged’ to get it to lock the door and start the washer.

Can I fix this from the front by removing the selector knob and the clear bezel around the button to remove and replace the START button? Is there a broken spring underneath perhaps? Is the clear bezel under the selector knob holding the START button and a spring in place?

The dryer is stacked on the washer. The alternative seems to be to lift the dryer off, remove the washer back, the washer top, and the washer front in order to remove the control panel. Then I would still have to remove the knob and bezel.

The knob does not pull off easily. Do I have to use tools to pry it off or is something (a clip or set screw) holding the selector knob?

Thanks to anyone who has worked with this panel and can offer me advice!

Unfortunately you are going to have to remove the top of the washer to access the control panel.

Once in there you are going to need some detailed instruction, but I can no longer link you to a service manual. See if you can do a search and get a free download of the service manual, or a download for a small price.

I have never experienced the problem you are having though, and am not sure how much you have to replace to fix it. If you click on your model number you will be sent to an exploded view of your machine.

Good luck, hope this helps.

If your duet washer won’t start its most likely due to a bad part behind the start button.
