electric oven/gas range: loud bang, smell burn, broiler element dead

Greetings all,
I read several threads and appreciated the replies given by Gene (thanks!).
I’m about to dive into my range to figure out exactly what’s going on and I’ll report here, fyi. But I would ask two questions:

  1. can anyone explain the loud bang noise… could it be sudden metal failure of the heating element? The rest seems to work normally, including the lower element…
  2. is it possible that the element "just failed" on its own, or is there a possible defect upstream?
    Thanks! Good luck to all

noted large burnt area on the main connector (12 wires total I think - 3 grouped in one corner were charred!), on one capacitor and the adjacent transformer on the electronic board, and also where the double heavy-gauge black lead connects to the board.
Several of the wires below the connector have clearly been overheated and if I were to repair this stove, I would replace the entire wiring harness from the back to the front control board. including the board of course.
This is the second time in 5 years that we have an electric problem with this magnificent range. The first time it was under warranty and I’d assisted the technician who replaced the control board. At this point, facing another $350 for the control board, I’m wondering whether to trash the stove (an expensive waste!!!) or replace all the parts, i.e. wiring harness and control board, if I can find where to get them. In the latter case, I’d also wonder where this whole problem originates: the range is in mint condition and I cannot explain why any of the wires would overheat and/or short out.
thanks for any advice, and be aware of Frigidaire PLCS389ECE.
