erractic agitator spin

Hey everyone I just got a pair of used kenmore elite washer and dryer combo. Ive noticed when running the washer it seems like the center piece that spins where you put the fabric softner does not rotate consistantly. Almost sounds like its skipping and grabbing. Anyways after reading I took off the cap and it looks like a few are worn and one isnt even comming out. But every tutorial I read on this removal shows a nut in the center to remove. Now either the nut on mine is extremely worn and grinded down to nothing or my model doesnt come apart like that and im missing something. Anyone know what to do in my situation?

thanks

thanks for the response im looking for a serial or model number where are they typical located on this style washer?

i took a picture of the center to give you a idea. Im still looking for a model number

Seems like the bolt is broken of try pulling up on it to remove the gear & "dog ears"

I cannot tell from the picture if there is a broken bolt, if so you will need a special tool (not an expensive one fortuntely) to get it out. Otherwise treat it as a I described above. Do not try to pull it out.

The model and serial numbers are under the lid on a "plate". On a used machine someone may have taken it off, but see if it is there.

I looked all over the washer and im convinced the tag is gone. I looked at the matching dryer and IDK if this will help at all but the dryer which looks idential on the outside at least still has the model tag

Dryer =
mod= 110-60936990
ser= mk1909729

again I dont know if this will help at all but I know now what the tags look like and im convinced the one on the washer is gone. Any help is appreciated thanks!

Just for kicks can you send a link to that special tool?

Just stop at any good hardware store or big box building supplies store and you will find a tool for removing bolts with the head broken off.

The bolt in there should have had a 7/16" socket head on it.

Hi here Look at it carefully. see if there are any tabs ( plastic clip ) to pry out on the gear. Note with the bolt head broken off the top should pull up & come off. then u will have to drill the bolt & extract it out, drill the bolt rethread it & use a bolt to match.:slight_smile:

Use a 1/2 drive socket extension to remove that piece, the plastic thing with the square hole in it is the bolt. If you don’t have a 1/2 socket extension, a really big flat blade screwdriver will sometimes work… The part you need is part Whirlpool part # 80040. They cost about 5 bucks.

Use model # LSQ9200PT0 as a guide to parts;)

Was looking at it last night and noticed the perfectly sqaure hole and thought to my self I bet a 1/2 extension and ratchet would fit that. I just bought the dogs now and will be going home to attempt it.

I wanna thank everyone on this post…it sure was a 1/2 ratchet and those pieces were very worn. Replaced em and now it splns like it should. there was a spring underneath and the top agitator came up easily. I noticed the agitator bounces around a bit still but not nearly as bad. As long as those teeth grab im happy. Thanks jeff for model number reference also!:smiley:

hey everyone well its been a few months and everything was great until today. The agitator is not spinning again however im pretty confident its not the dog gears this time. Theyve been replaced 2 months ago and it almost sounds like the agitator is frozen up and during the wash cycle after it fills with water I can actually change the knob that changes how fast the agitator spins and I can hear the motor working at different speeds but the center agitator is not moving and it will spin freely to the right no problem. But when I try to rotate it to the left its locked up. Now I dont know if this normal or not. First thing im going to do is take out the agitator and see if theres any problems with it. I have a bad feeling its a belt or even :frowning: transmission. Any ideas on where to start? thanks

soo i took it apart as far as I can figure out for right now. I took a picture any ideas on where to go from now.

I would start the washer ( small load) & observere what the agit. shaft is doing. Also check the belt tension to make sure it is not slipping also see if there is any oil on the belt. If these are ok guess u will have to go into the transmission may have a broken spring or gear fork. keep us updated.:wink:

please ignore that last post. that coupling means u have a direci drive and that is the culprit It must be replaced.Remove two straps (bracket) on motor remove drain hose slip motor out replace coupling & reassambly Screws holding bracket are 1/4". Again sorry about that last post.:o

Jeff thanks for the post I kinda figured that broked part was my problem lol. Quick question ive been looking around and noticed some people recomend taking off the chassis? Can I just flip this thing on its side and work on it that way?

thanks again for the response:D

You will need a special 9/16 deep well socket to get the agitator stud off that is below the plastic part.

done and done folks. Id say in a little than just an hour. Working perfect and seems a bit quieter than before :D. The only thing that isnt right IMO is one side of the chassis isnt "locked" in on the bottom but im not gonna worry about it till its till to move the thing. Thanks again everyone you saved me like always
