I think my refrigerator is dying!! Why? Well, this morning, got up, got the kids up, started making them breakfast and when I got the milk out of the refirgerator, it was not even cold. I opened the freezer (it’s a side-by-side) and saw a long thick icicle from the shelf below the icemaker to the second to last shelf. I felt the ice in the ice bin and it’s like it’s defrosting or the freezer is not cold enough. The ice is not completely frozen. We turned the icemaker off the other day because the bin is full. It sounds as though the refrigerator is running. Maybe not as loud as before this problem started this morning.

We noticed that the freezer did the thing I mentioned above 2 times in the past about 2 weeks apart in a month and a half time. This happened while we were out of town for the weekend. At that time, it seemed that the refrigerator side was still cold.

Any advice on the problem would be much appreciated.

The first thing I would do is remove the cover on the back, check if the compressor and the fan next to it are running and clean the condenser coil.
Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool refrigerator http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?diagram_id=102368&&model_id=261944
Gene.
Put the cover back and let the fridge run for one or two days, monitoring the temperature inside.
Post your findings.

Okay, thanks for the input. We will keep you posted.

HELP!! It’s doing it again; but it’s not fixing itself! There’s gotta be something that needs to be replaced to fix the thing. We just don’t know where to start.
PLEASE
I would recommend to replace the overload and the start relay (part number AP3108472) as you did it earlier.
If it would not help then the compressor is bad and has to be replaced. This job must be done by a certified technician and is very expensive.
Gene.
We will try to replace the parts listed above.
Thanks for the advice. Will keep you updated.
Thanks!
