Fridge side freezing food

My Frigidaire side by side is freezing food on the refrigerator side. We have double checked the temp controls and they are where they have been - no adjustment prior to the freezing problem beginning.

As of this AM, Temp in the freezer is -1 F. Currently temp in fridge is 30 F but we readjusted temp (turned control knob to off then back to 3 setting) this AM as it was freezing food again.

We cleaned the coils last week (they were a bit dusty) but we are still having the same problem.

I’ve read that it might be the damper or the thermostat - is there a way to test to be sure before we get a part on the way? Please advise. Thanks!

Hello,

Set the fresh food temperature control on 1 and wait about 24 hours before measure the temperature. Post the results.

Ok! I reset and will post later tonight.

Quick question: we are about to leave town for a couple of weeks are are worried that the fridge will freeze again, freezing the water supply and cracking the filter (as it did before).

Can we turn off just the fridge thermostat and prop the fridge door open, leaving the freezer side closed and freezer thermostat on? The control dials are separate but I am concerned turning off fridge will affect freezer. Thanks!

I don’t think it’s a good idea to turn off just one temperature control. If you have a lot of food to keep frozen then turn off the water supply to the refrigerator and remove the water filter. Otherwise just unplug the refrigerator and keep it off until you will be back.

After 24 hrs, temp on fresh side is 48 F with the temp setting at 1.

Slightly turn the fresh food temperature control towards colder (between 1 & 11/2). Check the temperature after 24 hours.

Repeat such adjustments in small increments until proper temperature (34°F - 39°F) reached.

Gene,

Left temp control at 1 setting while we were away for holidays, held at 45 degrees on fridge side.

Returned and began adjusting in small movements as instructed.

When at 1 1/2, stayed at 43 degrees.

When between 1 1/2 and 2, dropped to 20 degrees and was still running/dropping when I turned off and then set back to 1.

Tried again by setting to 1 and then waiting and then small adjustments over this past week. Same result; gets between the 1 1/2 and 2 setting and drops to 20, even 19 at one point on the fridge side.

Thoughts?

Sounds like the refrigerator temperature control is bad. The solution is to replace the temperature control. I would recommend to replace the whole control box which consists of both temperature controls, damper control and defrost control. It’s about $40 more expensive but it will make the repair much more reliable and simplier.

I sure appreciate your help - thank you!

You are welcome. Keep us posted.

Gene, an update -

Got the new part as advertised, great shipping time. We got the old part out (see notes below) and then got the new part in - and it was been working ever since! Just wanted to say thank you again for your help and for helping us get to the bottom of the problem and repair it. Really great work!

One note on the install: the instructions that came with the part were, well, not very helpful. The photos were not very clear and the wording was difficult to follow. As a result, the installation was really just a process of undoing screws and moving pieces around until we got everything loose. The one screw that had me frustrated was the one which holds the water filter housing (not sure that’s the exact name but that is what it looks like). That screw was not visible until the plastic cover over the water lines was removed. I would encourage anyone to be sure to take their time and not get frustrated, but a little note about that last "hidden" screw would have been awesome!

And to be clear: this is not a complaint, just an observation. We are happy for sure and I have/will recommend this to my friends! Have a great day and thanks again!!

Matt

You are welcome Matt. I’m glad it’s up and running. Thank you for your good words.
