Frost build up top half of freezer

I have an 11 year old GE side by side fridge/freezer that is getting frost build up on my food and ice cubes. I’ve tried numerous things to troubleshoot, but I’m out of ideas. Hoping someone could help steer me in the right direction as this has become a personal battle b/w me and the freezer.

Started off with everything in the freezer getting coated in frost that would build and build until shelves contained big blocks of frosted over food.

I opened the freezer and took out the back to expose the evaporator coils which were also frosted over. I ended up replacing the defrost heater and thought my problem was solved.

Now the bottom of the freezer stays frost free (where the heater is located) but from the halfway point and up items are still getting frosted over and the ice tray cubes turn into a stuck together mess. The build up seems to be the worst on the bottom of the ice holder.

I again opened the freezer to expose evaporator coils and this time found them looking good. I replaced the defrost thermostat (even though it seemed in working condition) in the hopes that the heater wasn’t being told to stay on long enough.

It’s been a few days, but already the ice cubes are stuck together and food towards the top of freezer is getting a frost coating. I’m sure the heater is going on, because I’ve seen it on at times when I open the freezer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do have an ohmmeter available for testing. Also, my freezer isn’t overloaded.

My other guesses at this point

  1. Somehow moisture is getting in. I’ve checked the door seal and it seems good. Ice flap is closing properly.

  2. Thermistor could be bad.

  3. Something wrong with the motherboard.

  4. Warm air from heater not being circulated (just a thought since problem is only happening in top half)
