Hello,
I have a 42" GE Monogram side by side first installed in 1999. It has been having issues with ice build up in the freezer compartment for the last few months. I have tried defrosting the unit and the problem comes back. Last time I took the inside top of the freezer apart and completely cleaned out the drain tube (I removed the evaporator drain pan) so I know it isn’t clogged with lint, dust, etc. I was good for several weeks, but this morning I see the signs of the ice returning. I have seen reference to an "Icing Kit". Is this simply a replacement part for my original parts or is there something really different that addresses the underlying issue. I’m sure it is possible that my defrost heater is simply wearing out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
One of the components in the defrost system is out. Use an ohmmeter to check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat for continuity. Check the defrost thermostat first while it’s frosty. It needs to be below 40*F to show continuity. If both check good, replace the motherboard.
Thanks for your reply Rick. I will give it a try over the weekend. I’m not sure I see a motherboard in the parts lists that I have seen online. The only one showing up seems to be related to the dispenser. I am fairly confident the timer is working as when I rotate it manually, it clicks and turns off the system so it can complete the defrost cycle. I did not notice the thermostat during my last tear down, but will look for it and measure the resistance when it is apart for debug.
If you have a defrost timer then you don’t have a motherboard (no model number)
