I’m new here and trying to get some help. I have a fairly new GE Profile sideby side that was about 8months to 1 year old when we bought our house back in April. The problem I am having is the temperature keeps going up and down in the fride and freezer compartments in cycles every week. For instance I will have the digital temp settings set at the recc settings of 0 F and 36 F for the freezer and fridge compartments and overnight the temp will slowly rise to 7-8F in Freezer and 43-46F in the fridge and then come back down over a 24-48hr period. The real pain is the ice will start melting in the Ice maker and drip down and ice up in the freezer compartment. I have taken off the back panel and cleaned of all the coils and hasn’t helped any but this seems like a thermostat issue to me. Let me know any advise to troubleshooting this and what I need to look for as I am very hands on with all appliances but just not familar with fridge’s but want to try and figure this one out as it is bugging the hell out of me.
Ok, last night I emptied the freezer and pulled the rear panel off the back of the freezer (inside). The Evaporator fan in the freezer is running but seems to come on and go off at times also the rear fan for the compressor/condensor is running just fine as well as the compressor is running fine. My coils in the rear of the freezer are half frozen up, but the freezer warmed up a ton last night and now will not go below 27f. After further research I am pretty sure it is the main board and I have sent an email to GEappliances.com to find out if my unit is still under warranty as I am not sure. If not then since I have a home warranty (bought the house 3 months ago) for the first year, I will probably go that route first as the new board costs around $150ish. Any advise on exactly what board to use with this model if I have to do it myself?

Very similar issue here Dave. I have no problems when my icemaker switch is off. But when I have it switched on - about after 2-3 days I see the temp go up in the top of the freezer section (top shelf stuff melting, ice cubes melting etc.) From what I gather here it could be the motherboard, but I am looking for confirmation like you what it is. Calling the GE customer service was embarassing (for them) to say the least - that is a waste of a 1-800 number. I have the motherboard all set to be ordered, but for $150 I’d like to know for sure if it is the right fix. For me it seems the ice tray does not know to shut itself off warm cycle - as only stuff in that vicinity begins to melt. If I turn off icemaker - i have no temp issues and all goods on top shelf stay frozen.

Do you have the same model fridge I have? If so what is the model/part # for the board we need - if I have to go that route? I have read that GE did a silent recall on some of these but I am unsure if our models/sn’s were included. Part of me doesn’t even want to waste my time calling GE as you found out. Also, I found out that my home warranty excluded my fridge - so no luck there for me and might just have to bite the bullett and get a new board.

Yup same here, I turned off the ice maker but not making much of a difference. I went ahead and ordered the board from appliance pro’s and it should be here on Tuesday as they already shipped it out fedex - whoop. I’ll let you know how it works.
You might want to check the motherboard in the back. Remove it and inspect the back of the board for bad solder connections at the big power relay, have fixed a number of these. Replacement board AP3957581 rather expensive.
Be aware that an intermittant evaporator/condensing fan motor could cause problems as well as freezer of fresh food thernmisters. They deteriorate and the plastic gets soft.
But thermister problems rather rare. Keep in mind that a failing evaporator/condensing motor will burn out the motherboard, not a nice thing to happen to a new motherboard. Any time I see a failed motor, I replace the motherboard as well.
Well guys, installed the new board last week and so far no issues. The fridge/freezer is holding temp fine and the evap fan runs just fine in the freezer. Kinda nice not hearing my compressor running non stop cause the fridge is always trying to get up to temp. I’ll let you know if anything changes, but thanks for the help.
same here…I just installed mine today in fact and so far it seems better…temp is holding at the indicated number on the display for both fridge and freezer. Making ice cubes and so far they aren’t melting. The only other thing I noticed was while looking from the front of the fridge - underneath - AFTER I put in the new board, it was FULL of dust under there on the black cage like thing…I usually have only vacuumed it from the rear…never from the front…so I am sure that will help it too. I hope it was still the MB and not just all that dust build up. Thanks guys - this site was a huge help.
Yup, I cleaned the coils (front and back) to no avail. The symptoms kept getting worse. Installed the board and smooth sailing so far. I even took my compressor to them and blew the rest of the dust out as getting to the front facing coils is pretty difficult from the front or rear of the fridge. Glad to hear your issues are resolved as well.

yea - temps are holding steady finally - no melting ice etc. so far so good. If I make it through the weekend I will definitely proclaim mission accomplished.
