GE Profile Side by Side freezer loosing temp

Hello,

We just bought a house about 3 months ago and all the appliances are GE Profile and the side by side freezer is now giving us issues. I noticed it making a weird noise one day about 3 weeks ago, I opened the freezer and there was a big icicle coming down in the back by the ice maker. So I thought it was the ice maker that was bad and so I had someone come out and take a look and they couldn’t find anything wrong.

Just yesterday I heard the noise again so I opened the freezer and found that it was up to 8 degrees, and my ice cream was mushy and my ice was a little melted. I took somethings out and dumped all the ice. My husband got home and vacuumed the dust out of the back and used the air compressor to get more out. It seems to be working now except for when I got home today it was making the noise again but wasn’t very warm, about 5 degrees.

The appliance repair told us over the phone that the compressor could be bad, and it was ~$600 to fix. But also the control board could be bad and that was about $200. I hate to throw money at something if we just need to get a new fridge. (By the way, the fridge part seems to keep temp just fine)

I read lots of things online about people having the same issues with GE Profiles. Most say the control board fixes the issue. My husband can get one and replace it but I hate to do that if its not the issue.

Any advice?
