Grinding Noise on Spin Stop

After replacing 14 year old 2-speed motor and cleaning inside of machine, drum, basket etc. and inspecting brakes and clutch, now I get a grinding noise for a few seconds after the spin cycle stops and basket stops. This started happening on about the 5th load after I re-assembled drive tube, gearcase, basket and tub.
Any ideas?
Basket drive block is tight and engaged properly. Brake shoes and clutch lining look okay. I do see 2 grooves on the outside of the basket drive tube about 6" down from the top. Not sure if they are original or being cut into the tube by something.
Can any techs out there tell me what controls how high the brake shoes ride in the brake drum and the vertical clearance? When assembled I can pull up on the basket perhaps a quarter inch and then push it back down.

UPDATE:
The best way I can describe the "grinding" noise on spin stop/braking is:
It sounds the same as when you install the wash basket over the basket drive block and spin it by hand without the spanner nut installed. Similar to someone grinding on a drum and creating an echo.
My plan of attack now is to start removing parts until the sound goes away?

Considering that I have two grooves being cut in the spin tube about 6" from the top I’m tending to think I have centerpost bearing issues?
