grove worn in tub

Developed crack in tub that holds water and replaced. Shortly afterwards, started leaking again. Took cover off and noticed balance ring had wore a groove completely through the new plastic tub in the front! Had been noticing it becoming increasingly difficult to keep in balance EVEN BEFORE I REPLACED TUB. Checked all 4 springs, all in place. Fluid in balance ring. Even took completely apart again thinking I didn’t get the metal tub seated well inside the plastic tub. I need new ANOTHER new tub but need to figure out what caused it. Only thing I can think of is weak springs but don’t want to spend anymore money if not reasonably sure that’s it.

This is a real mystery, highly unusual.

I can only suggest that you run it with the cabinet off and the lid switch by-passed and see if you can detect the problem.

All good suggestions but they all checked out OK. Thanks

I would put the money toward a used Maytag dependable care washer, much more rugged. These direct drive washer are light duty only, you will continue to have problems.

OK…replaced all springs and outer tub. Bypassed lid safety switch. Ran washer with nothing in it and extra small load fill. Ran fine, but on spin cycle there was a significant vibration. Not banging, but I would have expected it to be smooth as silk with nothing in it.

You repair guys out there. Should I have vibration on spin with nothing in it??

Now I’m wondering if I have a bent "drive shaft" from the motor or something. And with this initial vibration and the combination of clothes out of balance, it’s finding it impossible to balance itself and starts shaking so bad it flexes the tub enough to make contact with the fluid filled balance ring and wear a groove in the tub.

I will try a load of clothes next. Opinions???

Take the cover off and check the triangular skateboard under the tub. Make sure all small, brown friction pads are good and skateboard setting on the frame symetricaly.
Only other thing could be unbalanced brake shoes, where one is dragging and the other not. To check, turn the tranny coupler clockwise till it engages spin, if hard to turn, you have sticking brake shoes. To fix this, you could pry the spin tube down a little, then use a wood file and take some of the pad material off. You can check my sticky, Replacing direct drive washer brake shoes" for info. You also might pull the spin basket and check for a partially busted comb filter under the spin basket.
