I have just recently replaced the heating element in this electric dryer. It runs hot as long as there is nothing in it.

Can you give us some more detail. Specifically, what was it doing before you replaced the heating element, and what testing/observations lead you to replace the element. Also, exactly what is it doing now, it sounds like it is operating correctly (turning, blowing and heating as long as no clothes are in it) but doing everything but heating if you put clothes in it?

Hello sidfink43. Thank you for responding so quickly. I replaced the heating element after I changed the setting from medium to high. Once I did this, I smelled something burning. I went ahead and left the dryer runnig, but kept an eye on it. The dryer never heated up. After taking the dryer apart, I saw that one of the springs was broken (burnt) into. That is why I replaced the heating element. I followed the instructions that came with the new heating element. The dryer works just fine except for the fact that it does not heat up on Auto when there are clothes in it. If I run it on Auto with nothing in it, you can open the door and feel heat. If I put it on timed dry, it works just fine. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you did exactly the right thing with yur element.
The problem on Auto setting is probably in the moisture sensing area, and GE does not let out their tech info so I cannot tell you exactly where the problem is. There should be tech notes inside the console that may help you with diagnosing it. Also make sure all the wires are connected in the door switch area as in some cases the moisture sensor wires are also there.
