My Hotpoint dryer shuts off after 5 minutes on the high heat (cottons and whites) setting. Runs longer on low heat and medium heat settings (maybe 20 minutes before shutting off). Will run on fluff (no heat) for full cycle with out pre-mature shut off. I have cleaned the vents and ducts. Could it be a thermostat? And how do I know which one to replace? From what I have read there are several.
Thanks for the tip. I actually tried that as my first troubleshoot fix. Unfortunately the dryer is still prematurely shutting off even after my vent cleaning. What would you try next?
If the motor is quitting then you need a new motor most likely.
I would also look for a burnt wire lowering the voltage to the motor when heat is on.
Okay I’ll be doing some dis-assembly and trouble shooting this weekend and will post my findings. Thanks for the tip.
Turns out it was the safety t-stat located on the heater housing. Did a continuity test and found resistance and upon closer exam saw one of the terminals was fried. Even up to 1/2 inch of the electrical wire was obviously burned. I presume that the restricted vent pipe was not allowing proper heat flow which eventually caused failure of the t-stat. Thanks to all for their tips and advice.
