Hotpoint S/S won't Defrost

I have a Hotpoint HSS25IFMD WW side by side Frig/Freezer. The freezer coil does not appear to defrost. Every two or three weeks I have to manually defrost it. I have replaced the Defrost heater element, the thermistor, and the Main Circuit board.

Two questions:

1) What else can be wrong?

2) How do I test the Defrost cycle so I can see the element get hot?

Thank you!

Have you checked the defrost thermostat (#240 on the diagram) for continuity?

Gene.

Gene, No I have not. However, I have replaced that part.

Is that not the "Thermistor"?

Should that provide continuity when it is too cold?

Thanks.

You may have a bad evaporator thermistor. Check its resistance per your service sheet, or go to the "sticky" above "GE (GS and HS refrigerators) for thermister common resistances. You can check right at the Ji connector on the motherboard per your data sheet, or the data given in the sticky.
If ok, remove the motherboard 4 pin power connector, notice which pins are labeled "line and defr.) and place a jumper across the same connector pins. Then plug in the fridg. If freezer is cold, it should defrost, you can check with an amprobe. If not, you have to check the freezer for the bad component.

Richappy,

Thank you. I belive that I can follow that specifc advice. I apprciate that you and Gene have taken the time to assist me.

You are welcome. Keep us posted.

Gene.

It looks like water will run in the ice bucket after you hear the water valve turn off for the ice maker. Is it the solnoid valve leaking by after the water tray is full and it runs over? Where is the valve that needs to be replaced?
