We bought this Frigidaire Commercial Upright Freezer in 2007. Used it without problems. Recently, noticed the ice cream does not freeze. Meat seems to freeze. A pan of water froze up. Checked the temperature with a cheap thermometer – about 20 degree F. Opened the internal panel and found that a big chunk of ice is formed at the heat exchanger end of the evaporator coil, near the defrost sensor. Only minor froze was formed on the evaporator coil. Fan and compressor seems to be running. Door seal is okay. What is the problem?

See the attachment for the tech sheet.

I am not sure what this means.
Was it an even coating of frost?
Was it just frost in one area or blotchy?
Did you check that the putty that seals where the evaporating tubing enters the freezer was OK. If they use putty I am not sure about this unit but that is the norm.

Do they run all the time except when it goes through a defrost cycle.
If yes then this is an indication of either a defrost problem or a sealed system problem.
The symptoms you gave point more towards a sealed system problem.
Note that defrost should occur every 12 hours of compressor run time and should last about half an hour.

The evaporator tube enter seal is plastic piece. I sealed it with putty. The corner connection of the bottom panel to the back panel has slit opening about 1/32 inch. Will that cause any leak? I took a photo. Will try attaching it.Fan and compressor seems to be running.

With the power off, I chisel and break up the big ice chunk. With the evaporator all clear of ice and frost, I turn on the power. The fan and compressor are running. We will see if the temperature will get down to around zero F.Note that defrost should occur every 12 hours of compressor run time and should last about half an hour.
How do I attach the photos?
I added some comments on Denman’s reply post. This is my first time using this forum. Don’t know the correct way to reply. Still want to know how to attach photos.
To add a picture you can use attachments.
It is the little paper clip icon.
I am wondering if the problem is the compressor. If the compressor low pressure side is much higher than spec. The freon coming out of the heat exchanger is not pulled to the other part of the evaporator. The very cold temperature causes the big ice (frost) chunk near the heat exchanger and the rest of the evaporator is warmer. What do you think? I try attaching but don’t see the paper clip
Yes I also think that it may be a sealed system problem.
