Kenmore dryer smell of gas, not heating

Recently there has been a smell of gas when my dryer is on and clothes are coming out damp. When it’s turned on, the igniter glows and the gas ignites but after about 10 minutes the flame goes off and I start smelling gas. Is this a sign that I need to replace the igniter? or is it the gas valve coils? Thank you.

More then likely has nothing to do with ignitor at all…Is it burnt gas smell or fresh gas? Have you checked the air flow inside the unit and your ducting leading out of the house if it’s clogged of course you’ll get burnt gas smell because there’s nowhere for it to exit except stay in the machine. As you stated the gas goes off after 10 minutes but does it ever come back on again? Things to check…Check the gas connections from the wall by using soapy water or windex at the wall valve then all throughout your supply hose going to unit and connection at the main line coming in. If you find nothing from that path then i’m thinking you probably have a faulty burner assembly and you may need to replace it…Part # W10465748 has a new ignitor and coils included goes for around $175.

Thank you for your response. The smell was of fresh gas, I checked the gas connections and airflow and everything checked out fine. I turned on the dryer to see if the flame comes back on, it glowed and the gas ignited and the flame went off after 5 minutes. A minute later I got a glow and flame again and stayed on for a couple of minutes. After the 3rd time of glow and ignition, it just glowed red and was off without a flame. This, glow but no flame, went on several times before I turned off the dryer. There was no smell of fresh gas this time around. Any ideas? thank you.

Sounds like possibly bad coils…usually bad coils show within the first 10 minutes of testing and will do what your saying…try the coils first there about 20 bucks…Check your venting out of the house also…disconnect the ducting off the back of the unit and see if the flame gets bigger or gets sucked up into the back of the unit better if it does you have vent clogging going on in unit or in the walls of the house…also push the door switch button in while the door is open and test it by turning it on with the door open put your hand over the lint trap area and you should have pretty good suction if the vent is inside the unit itself…if it’s in the top don’t attempt doing that…if your air flow is good out of the house or inside the unit i’d change out the coils first…
