Kenmore Washer noisey on brake

I have a Kenmore 80 series washer machine that when it finshes a cycle and is changing it makes a horrible racket. I think its trying to stop the spinning drum like brakes engaging. I have taking it all apart a few times thinking that loud of a noise has to be very easy to find? but nothing looks broken or loose? Any Help?

If the spin basket is not loose, I would pull the pump and motor off and turn the tranny coupler clockwise till it engages spin. As you turn the coupler, the basket should spin. If you feel any roughness you have a bad transmission internal nylon gear, just pull tranny to verify.

Thanks for the reply, Im pretty sure I took the trans apart and didn’t see any plastic gears? How do you know if the basket is loose? I think it may be up there? When I put it back together it’s better for a a couple washes then it starts getting worse?

Remove the agitator and check the drive block nut, probably loose. Pull the spin basket out and check the spin tube tabs, might be worn. If ok, use the spanner wrench AP3538707 to tighten the nut, gotta be real tight to prevent problems.

I have changed that block before because it was worn out. About 2 years ago, I thought that was my problem as well a few times but it looked ok and I changed it anyways. I dont have a spanner wrench to tighten it so I use a long flat punch and a hammer. I think I get it as tight as I could with any spanner wrench. Those tabs were bent and rounded?I straighten then and filed them square again the first time I took it apart. Like I said when I put it back together its quite for a couple washes then starts getting louded again. I think its up in that area as well but dont know how to locate the problem?

Unfortunately, you might need a new spin tube on that, the chewed up tabs may have damaged the drive block. Really hard to get that nut on tight without the spanner wrench.

Thanks for the help
