kitchenaid freestanding icemaker frozen in clean mode

My Kitchen aid icemaker has a clean mode that cleans the parts that make the ice. I thought that one has to put the system in that mode for it to work; but for some reason, my icemaker goes into that mode on its own. We used to think that it did that periodically on its own as a normal function, but lately it is in that mode more than it is in the icemaking mode. The area that holds the ice is not refrigerated, so when it is in this mode, the ice in the bin melts. We have tried shutting the system down and restarting an hour or two later, but that doesnt seem to help. Any ideas???
