kitchenaid ice maker

I have a side by side unit and the water works but the ice maker stopped making ice. Can anyone help?

Open the freezer door. Make sure the "on-off" switch on the right side is on. Close the emitter door on the left side and check the LED status on the right side. Post the result.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=502458

Gene.

When I do as you asked I get a red blinking light. Also the unit is making some ice now but is not ejecting it.

How does it blink? Try to be as much detailed as possible.

Gene.

Gene,
I appreciate you getting back to me. The red light blinks in a series of 2 red blinks, pauses, and then it repeats itself.

Bruce,

Looks like the problem is a bad optic boards (#26 & #38 on the diagram).

Gene.

Gene,
Today when I got home the light indicator on the freezer was not working at all, could it still be the same problem? Also where are these boards located and how do I get to them?
Thank you
Bruce

Bruce,

Yes, it could.

Please click on the "diagram" in the previous reply and look for ## 26 & 38.

Gene.

Gene,
Just getting back to the freezer trouble again and before I order the parts that you recommended I looked at the light again and now it is staying on but red and i do get an ice cube occassionally. Do you still recommend changing these parts?
Bruce

Bruce,

What is the exact temperature in the freezer?

Gene.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. The temp is -20 and the red light stays on when i depress the door lever

-20°F is way too cold. Normal temperature in the freezer suppose to be about 0°F. You have to adjust the temperature.

Gene.

It can cause any problems.

Gene.

Bruce,

You may want to start from adjusting the temperature inside the freezer to 0°F. Then wait about 24 hours to see the real temperature and watch the ice maker.

Gene.

still not working any other thoughts?

Bruce,

Back in May I recommended to replace the optic PC boards. Money saving options did not work. So, it’s time for repairs.

Gene.

Bruce,

Per your post back in May it was blinking wherever the emitter door was open or closed. Now it does what it suppose to. So, we can assume that optics are fine now.

Is the "on-off" switch in on position?

Make sure the water feeding tube into the ice maker is not frozen. Locate the water inlet valve on the back of the refrigerator. Swap the wires between the green and red (orange) solenoids. Depress the water dispenser lever for a few seconds and check if there is water in the ice maker. Post the results.

Gene.
P.S. The LED does not change its color for any condition. If it’s red then it was made red by the manufacturer.

when I did as you suggested and then pressed the water dispenser on the outside of the ref. water filed the ice tray.

That means there is nothing wrong with the water valve and the problem is that the power to the water valve is not coming from the ice maker. The solution is to replace the ice maker.
