Loud banging during normal load spin

Everything works fine in the Normal mode until it gets to the fastest speed on the spin cycle. There is an unbelievable banging only in the Normal load spin. It is not the typical bang of leveling off the heavy contents. The spin cycle works fine (no banging) in the other modes like hand washables, permanent press, etc.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Washer is about 14 years old so I’m not sure it’s worth fixing unless this is something minor.

You will need to remove the cabinet and check the suspension system. Check the 3 horizontal springs (#3) at bottom of tub and also the 1 vertical spring (#15) in the back. Sometimes the lower hole in the cabinet for that spring will rust out and the spring no longer does it’s job. Check that the suspension plate (#17) is in proper position, oriented as shown in photo. Could also be that the suspension pads (#16 and #18) are worn or broken.

Any idea how much that type of repair will cost? Should I repair or get new machine?

This is a Whirlpool direct drive machine which is well worth repairing. It’s no big deal to remove the cabinet and inspect the suspension yourself. If the hole for the rear counterbalance spring has rusted through, just drill a new one.
