magic chef oven temperature

I have a Magic Chef electric slide in oven / range 6898VVV about 13 years old.

The oven temperature does not seem to be as accurate or as consistant as it used to be. I am not sure which sending unit I need to replace, as I am seeing at least three:

  1. small round thermostat mounted behind clock unit, in the top area underneath the cook top…near the end of the heat tube that comes up and over at about a 45 degree angle from the oven

  2. small rod about 6" long that projects out inside the oven, mounted to the rear… called "oven sensor kit"

  3. some sites show an "oven thermostat" which appears to be a rod and a thermostat unit - not sure where this one goes

The first thing I would do is measure the temperature inside the oven to figure out the difference between the set and real temperatures.

Place an oven thermometer in the middle of the oven cavity and set the oven for 350°F. Wait about 10 minutes after the oven preheated, open the oven door, read and post the temperature.

Gene - I’ve read that inexpensive / cheap oven thermometers can be very inaccurate… and I don’t want to spend money for a professional model.

Let’s make an assumption that either or both of these conditions are present:

  • The actual temp is more / less than the temp that is set at the control

  • The variation between the low / high ranges… when the heating element cycles on / off is large…

If either / both of those issues are present, I assume that the sensing device is going bad…which of the 3 temperature sensing devices listed in my original post do I need to replace?

If the difference between the set and real temperature is less than 35°, it can be adjusted without parts replacement, but you do not like it.

Measure the oven sensor resistance. It suppose to be about 1100 Ohms at the room temperature.

If there is nothing wrong, then the control board (aka a clock) has to be replaced.

Gene - can you tell me how to adjust the displayed temp if it is not accurate, but within the parameters you list?

The adjustment instructions are in the Owners manual. I could not find it on line, probably due to age of the unit. The adjustment has to be controlled by measuring the oven temperature.

Gene.

Gene - thank you very much for the advice - I just checked my owner’s manual and you are right - there are instructions in there for adjusting it… thanks again… Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!

You are welcome. Happy Holidays to you and your family as well!
