I have a Maytag MAV7600AWW that has stopped spining. In recent weeks it had gotten loud when spinning, now it will not spin. I have checked underneath and the drive pulley turns when in the spin cycle. I cannot turn the tub. I have tapped on the end of the pulley shaft with no success. I have read about thrust bushings and also bad transmissions. How can I tell which is the problem. If it’s a bushing it is worth reparing, if it is the transmission, I think it is replacement time.

MIP,
If the thrust bearing assembly is worn out, it won’t activate the brake and spin the tub.
heres some operation information to help

As stated previously, the Drive Pulley and Cams provide a cam action which raises the Drive Pulley during the counterclockwise (spin) direction of the Motor. When the [FONT=Arial][SIZE=2][COLOR=#231f20][FONT=Arial][SIZE=2][COLOR=#231f20][FONT=Arial][SIZE=2][COLOR=#231f20]

Spring and moves the Rotor and Lining assembly up the
drive tube disengaging it from the Stator. The Transmission is now free to spin."
You may have to remove and re adjust the drive pulley and drive cam (less tolerance) and attempt to turn the pulley and spin the tub from below. If you notice any distortion in the pulley, cam, or washer(s) during the tear down order and replace the thrust bearing kit
Good Luck,
