Maytag Centennial dryer will not heat up

My Maytag Centennial gas dryer will no longer heat up when turned on. It still spins but does not produce any heat to dry the clothes. It will also run non stop as if the timer is not working as well. I have tried each setting, and all have failed to heat up.

Any suggestions?

Below the dryer door on the left side is a plastic plug that will pop out. Start the dryer on timed dry high heat and look through that viewing hole and see if the igniter glows red and then turns off. If it does replace the coils on the gas valve. If you don’t see it glow red you’ll need to check it for continuity. If it reads open, replace it. Igniter-#279311 Coils-#279834

Thanks Rick,

I tried what you suggested and I don’t see anything but darkness. I will figure out how to check for continuity.

Remove the back of the dryer and check the thermal fuse first. On a gas dryer the thermal fuse is inline with the gas valve. Part# 3392519 If it checks good here’s how to remove the front panel:
Remove the lint filter and the two screws right below it. Use a putty knife or something similar to release the two clips in the front corners between the top and front panel. Lift the top up and lean it back out of the way. Remove the two screws on the inside holding the front panel to the two sides. Lean the front panel forward and disconnect the door switch connector. Pull up on the front panel to release it from the two lower clip.

Hi. I found this forum because I’m having similar trouble. My dryer will start fine and heat fine. But after a few min. the heat goes out and will not start again. I vaccummed all the lint out of everywhere. Any ideas? Like I said, the glow plug glows, and it fires, but after a few min. goes out and won’t re fire.

Thanks.
John

Hi John,

What is the complete model number of the dryer?

Would the igniter glow again?

Gene.

Greetings,

I tried the troubleshooting mentioned above and I found (or at least it seems) that the pilot light, the igniter and coils seem to be working.

The next question would be, what if they don’t light, ignite etc. on automatic settings? Is there a way to troubleshoot that?

Thx

Then you will need to find out where you’re losing the voltage to the gas valve. If it works on timed and not automatic, it’s probably the timer that’s faulty.

Thx Rick.

So if I understand you, I would want to replace the dial mechanism (part?) Is that a difficult task? And what’s the best way to find that part number?

No, I just said usually but depending on your model it could be anything. What’s your model number?

It’s a Maytag Centennial (MGDC400VW0).

I think this is the same for your model so try this; Be sure the dryer is in standby mode (plugged in with all indicators off, or with only the Dry indicator on). Select any one button (except Control Lock and Start/Pause) and follow these steps: Using the same button (remember the button) Press/hold for 2 seconds> Release for 2 seconds> Press/ hold for 2 seconds> Release for 2 seconds> Press/ hold for 2 second. If this test mode has been entered successfully, all indicators on the console are illuminated for 5 seconds with 8:88 showing in the Estimated Time Remaining three-digit display. If there are no saved fault codes or active fault codes, center board indicators on the console will momentarily turn off, then stay on with 8:88 displayed. If entry into Diagnostic Test Mode is unsuccessful, choose a different button (except Control Lock and Start/Pause) and repeat. If there is an active fault code, it will be flashing in the display. If there is no active fault code, 8:88 will be displayed, center board indicators momentarily turn off, and then all the indicator lights will be turned on. If there are any saved fault codes, the most recent code will show “F:” and flash “XX” where “XX” is the fault code. If there are no fault codes, open the door and locate the moisture sensor, two metal strips on the inside of the dryer. Wet your finger and bridge both strips. If a continuous beep tone is heard and an alphanumeric number is displayed on the console, the sensor is OK. If a continuous beep tone is not heard or is heard before bridging the two metal strips, there’s a problem with the moisture sensor. Press the Power/Cancel button to exit diagnostics.

Looks like either I gave you the wrong number, or there may have been a couple units with the same number.

My Centennial only has a dial - old school.

OK, old school. Check the cycling thermostat for continuity. Measure the thermostat heater (smaller wires on the cycling thermostat) It should measure 5600-8400 ohms. If it checks out, replace the timer.

Ok, sounds simple enough… Unless I don’t know what the ‘cycling thermostat’ is. Or where it is. Measuring resistance I’ve got, locating ‘smaller wires’ I’ve got, I just need to know where

Rick my light does come on and ignite for about 15 seconds and then turns off when I checked where you pop off the plastic piece … Does that mean it Dosent work ?

Natasha, give me your model number and describe exactly what it’s doing.

Model MGDC400VW0 it I hot but not drying I read earlier posts and popped off the plastic portion below the door and in fact it would ignite but then go out it is a gas dryer
