maytag dryer help

Hello

I have a maytag dryer model MDE9606AYW. It has been making a squeaking sound for a while, then the other day it stopped working. I could force it on by pushing the ON button and holding it for a couple of seconds and it would run for about 20 seconds then stop.
It also has a rattling noise when running.
If I let it cool off, it seems to run fine. It will dry a load of clothes before shutting off.
I took the front off and looked at the belt, it seems fine. I also looked around inside but don’t really know what I’m looking for. I held in the door switch and turned it on but could not locate the squeaking noise. It wasn’t too dirty (lint) inside but I cleaned it out anyway.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the motor is jamming for some reason.
Open it up and check all moving parts. Especially the blower wheel and the front glides. Look for any spot that it looks like metal has been rubbing on metal. It is fairly common for these blower wheels to cause problems re: strip out and come loose so they only rotate some of the time.
Also check that nothing has fallen into it.

This seems to indicate a motor problem. The motor has a thermal protect built into it. If the motor overheats the protect opens and then you have to wait till the motor cools down before it will restart.

Possible causes are motor bearings, rear support rollers, idler wheel, front glides and the blower wheel.
Be careful when running the unit with the door open or when unit is apart as this stops air being pulled over the heating coils and they can overheat and blow the thermal fuse on the heater case.

Sounds like the drum is overloading the motor causing it to overheat and trip it’s internal thermal protect.

Try rotating the drum by hand, it should turn fairly easily.
I know that is not a very good description so you may want to try this on a couple other dryer to get a feel for it.

If it turns OK then your motor is probably on it’s last legs.
