Maytag Dryer slow to dry and smells like gas inside

Maytag gas dryer fires burner for about 5-8 seconds. I jumped the theromstat and it continued to run. I ordered one based on this and changed the thermostat and still only burns for a couple of seconds. Sometimes we open it and the drum is cold and there is a faint smell of gas. Is there another limit that can cause this. We have stopped using it since the gas smell.

The first thing I would check are the exhaust line (inside the dryer and outside as well) and the blower wheel.

Thanks I did that first and found a large lint ball in the flex exhaust line. I then took everything apart and cleaned the entire dryer. This did not help and I am wondering if something was damaged due to the blockage. I still can not figure why when I pull the theromstat away from the burner tube it will continue to burn fine. Once I put it back the flame lasts no more than 7 seconds.

The thermostat you are talking about is a hi-limit thermostat which is a safety device to prevent overheating. If is doing his job and doing good. There is something wrong with air flow through the dryer. Check the blower wheel and all seals. Run the dryer with the vent hose disconnected on the back.

hea ts no more than 50 celsius starts then cuts out in 20 secs.about 1 min starts again,same thing.replaced coils.flame sensor and hi-limit cut out ohms read o.k.thermister has no continuity on it.is this normal?

Have you cleaned the vent line outside the dryer and the dryer ducts inside?

Have you checked the blower wheel?

yes.i isolated the high temp thermostat and the dryer works great.Ill pick one uo tommorow i guess.seem right?please let me know thanx.dryer is clean from blow.housing to outside vent.work great with hi limit not in flame.(this should not be done by a layman,it is very dangerous)never run dryer without limit in crrect place.this was done to trouble shoot item!!!
i am a hvac tech so i need appl.pro advise…ps seals around drum are fine.

A faulty high limit thermostat (20 on the diagram) can be the culprit. Especially if the vents are clean and the flame is good.

replaced hi-temp. thermo.unit seeme to be cycling fine.On time dry it reaches 60celsius then drops to about 54-55cel.then kicks on again.does this sound good?also should there be continuity when testing across the thermister?when i check ohms it reads 16k at room temp(60-65)F…

The temperature seems to be good. The thermistor normal resistance reading shroud be about 10 Kohms @ 77°F.
