Maytag fridge running excessively

Hi,
I have a Maytag side-by-side model MZD2768GEW that is cooling OK but runs almost constantly. I read the sticky about evaporator coils freezing up but my symptoms seem a little different. In my case, both freezer and fridge sides are cooling. It’s just that the compressor seems to be running 24/7.

So I checked the evaporator coils and found frozen ice in the upper section of the compartment, covering the defrost thermostat and what appears to be plumber’s putty covering some tubing. But there’s no ice or frost build up at the botton of the coil where the heater is. I thawed the ice with a hair dryer and put all the panels back. Although it helped, the compressor is still running almost constantly. When I set the temp control to the middle for both freezer and fridge, it seems to run for 23 hours and stop for 1 hour during a day.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Things I found so far:

  • Compressor is hot to the touch. Condenser fan runs. I just cleanned the condenser coils.

  • Freezer fan runs. No ice in evaporator compartment. I checked the return air opening behind the crisper drawers and it’s not blocked.

  • Door seal seems OK. Did the dollar bill test although the freezer door is a little mis-aligned with the cabinet.

  • Temperature control seems to be OK. It eventually stops on its own and stops when I lower the freezer settings. It starts up in about 10 minutes when it stops on its own with freezer/fridge temp set at 5.

  • Even though the fridge is running constantly and it cools OK, things don’t seem that excessively cold.

  • There’s air comming out to the fridge side but it seems weak. No noticeable increase in airflow when I open the freezer door. Don’t know if the damper control is bad or not.

What can I do next? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

it sounds like you may have either a freon leak or restriction of freon or compressor problem , i think you need a technician
