maytag mav8757aww will not drain and finish

Hello, I have a Maytag mav8757aww toplaoder. I noticed a burning smell and the cycle end started not draining and spinning unles you push the timer in and out slowly several times with sometimes a buzz/hum sound by the timer area if it wouldn’t start again. I thought it was the motor(the smell) and the timer.So I changed the motor,belt,timer and lid switch. While doing this I noticed the control board clipped to the back of the timer has 2 big resistors that appear to be a little brown in that area on the board. The burning smell seems to gone away after changing the parts but i still have the drain and spin issue. I’m gonna try the new control board but I wanted to see if anyone had a similar problem or know if there is something prior to the control board that may have caused the resistors to burn out. There’s really not much left to change other than 3 button switches.I’ve checked all the connections and grounds. I know some Maytags have a wax motor that caused some parts to burn out on the board but I don’t believe this model has a wax motor. I just don’t want to change it and have the resistors burn up again. Any ideas would be helpful at this point! Thanks!

I think you have said it all, you have replaced everything except the board, so I agree that the board will need to be replaced.

Ok, good. If you get it working it should last indefinitely, so I think it is well worth the effort given what you have done so far.

Before you put in the new board examine all of the wiring carefully for any breaks, frayed areas, areas where the insulation has rubbed off and so forth.

Finally, if the new board does not fix things you may have received a bad timer replacement, so keep that in mind as you go forward.

Thanks again for the advise! Any input is helpful. I will examine every wire from the motor on up as well as double check the connections(reseating them) and grounds for any corrosion or loose connections. I thinking of plugging in a surge protector for power outages. Any input on that? I should have the control board tomorrow 5/21 and if so I will put it in tomorrow night and post the outcome with my fingers crossed of course. These folks are really good about getting the parts out. I usually get them in 2 days and this forum is great for everyone’s trials and tribulations. Again thanks for the reply and advise. Part was back-ordered but I finally put the control board in today. Before I put the board in the washer started to work again. All the more reason for it to be some sort of intermitant board issue.It would finish the cycles but now it wasn’t agitating. After putting the board in so far everything is okay. The cycles finish and it agitates only the agitator seems to be moving around alot and has some side to side as well as a little up and down play to it so I’m going to make sure the bolt isn’t loose and then take it off to check to make sure it’s not worn out where it goes onto the transmission. I will update with the agitator issue and also if the earlier problems were resolved with the changing of the control board. Thanks again for all the help.

Thanks for updating us. Keep that replacement board in reserve, I think you are correct in that the current board has an intermittent fault, so you will problably need it some time in the future.

These are really good machines when they work, but when they don’t, well you wish you had just the good old mechanical ones.

Check out your agitator, and you should be all set.

I checked out the agitator and it looked fine. Bolt was tight and the bottom looks good. The top looks okay just has some movement side to side. Maybe it’s supposed to I never really looked at it until the old control caused it not to agitate. Several washes in on the new board and all is well. I suspect that is why the board was back-ordered. Probably a popular item. I will hold on to the old board and see if I can get someone to test it. Maybe it’s just the 2 big resistors that need replaced on it. The board was like 93.00 so it may be worth it to have it repaired for a standby. Of cousre I got 7 years out of the first one. So I’m hoping for another 7 with the old extra motor,timer and belt. All and all if you have a burning electrical smell and it’s not the belt and the motor works intermitantly with other sporadic drain and spin issues, try replacing the control board first or at least look at the area around the 2 bigger resistors to see if it looks a little brownish. Get a new hood switch too while your at it. I’ll post an update in a few weeks.
