my 6 year old maytag top mount refridgerator cycles on with the fan running fine. Then the compressor attempts to start making a loud buzzing for several seconds followed by a loud click then the compressor quits. the compressor will eventually kick on quietly and cools/freezes fine, but eventually repeats the buzzing and clicking off. I’m guessing start relay…any advice would be great. When the compressor eventually won’t start at all, if i unplug the unit for an hour or so it will start and run fine for a while before repeating the problem again.

Check that the condenser/compressor fan is running OK.
Also tat it’s fan blades are clean and that the condenser couils are clean.
Here is a good link on how to check the compressor and start relay (PTC)/overload.

If it check out OK I would replace the start relay (Item 733 in Section 6) as it is not too expensive.

Thanx denman, replaced the relya and overload, ran fine for a couple of days, now repeating the problem with compressor buzzing and clicking off. if i unplug the fridge for an hour it starts fine again for a day or so, cools normally, but eventually won,t start again. Compressor or could it be run capacitor?
Compressor
Probably
or could it be run capacitor?
Possible but they are pretty reliable.
The only way to reliably check it is to replace it.
Checking it with a meter will only tell you if it will take a charge or if it is shorted or open.
The problem is you cannot check it at actual operating voltages and that is when they can leak current.
The link I included does show how to check it with a meter.
