Maytag Washer only works on delicates cycle.

First, let me thank whomever answers my question.

Ok… I have an old maytag washing machine model LAT9406AAE. It started acting up on the ol’e lady a few weeks ago, so I got under and behind it and started poking around.

I got ahold of the wiring harness going to the back of what i can best describe as a music box looking carousel timer and click clack it went to working. Worked for a few months, then once again it only works completely through it’s cycle on delicates setting. All others it will work until it is supposed to spin, or agitate, then it just stops.

Ok, says, I, it’s that carousel timer again, so this time Pull it out, take some contact cleaner to the blades and contact surfaces and put it back in…same thing.

So, I pull it back out and take an electrical meter to it to try to figure out which contacts ain’t makin and which are. After rolling it around and checking for continuity between the blade power comes in on and all the rest in various positions, I cant make any sense out of the damn thing. It vseems like it works on hot contacs sometimes and grounding on others. I dunno. So I try to clean the surfaces off again and put it back in…same thing, stops right at agitate and spin on all settings but delicates.

Near as I can tell the the a/c motor has a device on top which must tell the motor which way to turn and help it start, It doesnt look like delicates,normal or heavy modes have a difference to the function or rpm of the motor, just the time it spends in each cycle, This must mean all modes are the same, but the duration of each cycle is different because of this timer. but I might be wrong. Methinks this means the motor and junction on top is good, if it works in any mode, the motor and junction device must be good. There is no relays or switches anywhere other than this timer, that I can see.

That can only leave the music box spindle looking carousel timer. Or am I missing something?

I have no schematic or wiring diagram and need some help here.

I still thinks it’s this carousel timer, but the thing seems to damn simple to be messed up.

Any advice on how to check it or where else to look?

This washer has a two speed motor. It operates only in low speed in delicate cycle and only in high speed in the other cycles. The problem is not likely the motor because it always starts in high speed regardless of selected cycle, however the path of power to the motor is different. Check continuity between the black wire at the motor and the black wire at the timer (the one next to the orange and yellow wires). Check closely for a break in the wire near the timer connector. If it checks out ok, the timer is likely defective.
