The washer makes a grinding/scraping sound occasionally during the wash and rinse cycles. Not all of the time and not during spin cycles. I have checked the balance and it appears ok. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is within the molded (cast) part below the washer tub. I can feel it when that part tries to ratchet/rotate and that is when it makes the sound. The frequency is somewhat inconsistent, sometimes every 10 seconds or so and other times it does not happen for a minute. There is no sound during spin cycles.

Well that is in the most expensive part of the machine, a High Torque transmission, and leaves you with two choices. You can live with it unitl it stops altogether, or replace the machine. Prices on new basic top loaders are very low right now, the lowest in years so I suggest you go that route.
