I have a hand me down washer that has always made a ton of noise in the spin cycle. So I pulled the panel off and found that the base had broken loose. The three mounting points that attach it to the tub were all either completely busted loose or half busted. So I tore it apart and welded it back together. It worked great right away but there was a squeak noise. I hoped it would stop after a cycle or two and it did. For two weeks all seemed great. Then my wife reported a burning rubber smell and a full tub of water. I tried closing the lid and the motor comes on for about 5 seconds then turns off, but it does not spin. I pulled the front panel off and the belt is melted to the tub pulley. So I cut it off and there are still pieces melted on the pulley, but I’ll take care of that later. So it seems to me that the motor is turning fine which is turning the belt fine. So the tub pulley must have froze in order for the belt to melt. So something in the tub assembly must be bad. That leaves me with the base bearing, brake assembly and transmission. After I had cut the belt off, I attempted to hand spin the tub and it wouldn’t go either direction. So I tore it all apart again. I removed the tub assembly from the base. The tub base bearing spins free. The brake is locked up. The tub spins free with the base assembly removed.
Is there a way to test the transmission? Or the brake assembly?
Thanks
