No spin cycle and aggitator will not move

Our maytag performa washer will not spin on the cycle, however, will agitate during the wash cycle. The inner basket will only move under my power when the spin cycle is on or off. Is this a sympton of the thrust bearing or something greater? The brake must be released since I can move the inner basket, correct?

Have a friend help you with this check: Tilt the machine back toward the wall and get under it enough to move the large (white) pulley. As you move it by hand in one direction, have your helper confirm that the agitator is working. Reverse directions and have your friend confirm that the basket spins. If you don’t get this action, you either have a worn out thrust bearing, or a gad transmission. If you can turn the basket by hand, the brake may be worn. If you get no spin with a worn brake, you may have a bad transmission. The only way to confirm a bad tranny is to remove the brake and then see if you can spin the basket from underneath the machine.
