Not freezing

I have replaced the thermostat, defrost element, and timer. The freezer is cold, but not freezing. The fridge is cool but not cold. the compressor is HOT to the touch. The fans are all working. There is a layer of frost on the elements when it is supposedly freezing that melts away when it goes into defrost. One day last week the food in the bottom of fridge was frozen–next day it was luke warm. What to check next?

I am assuming the thermostat you replaced was the defrost thermostat.

It sounds like you temperature control thermostat is not operating correctly.

Below is a link with info on how to check the temperature control

Note that it may check OK because it sounds like it has gone intermittent.

I am also assuming that the layer of frost you saw on the evaporator coils was fairly even over the whole evaporator. If it was just in one area, where the freon enters the coil, it could be you have a low freon condition.

Thanks. I think it is a mixture of both. Can the freon even be charged in this thing? (obviously by a pro not me). I turn the temp control (in freezer) sometimes when it doesn’t seem cold and nothing happens (no kick on just a click where it should be kicking on or nothing at all)–yeah, i check to see if it is in defrost first. Today she is cold but as it gets warmer through out the day–so does the temp inside the refrigerator.
