Permanent Press Cycle Stuck in Fill/Drain Forever!

Hi-
My Whirlpool washer gets stuck halfway through the Permanent Press cycle, after the first fill, agitate, drain, and spin. It took a few times using it to notice that I’d heard it filling for over half an hour- when I checked, basin was half full of water, and the level was doing nothing (so I assume it’s filling and draining at the same time…). It only happens in that one part of that one cycle, I think- I’ve never timed the Regular or Short cycles, and don’t know how long each part is supposed to last, but they seem reasonable.
I’m pretty good at fixing things, and am a broke student-type that can’t throw money away on utilities, but if radical brain surgery or rocket science is required, I’ll probably just choose one of the two working cycles when I wash instead. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated…
Thanks!

Ok, pretty weird situation.

The machine will fill and drain at the same time if water is being siphoned out of the machine because the drain hose is too deep into the drain or it is sealed in and the lack of air creates a siphon. This does not seem to be what is happening with you.

The only thing I can think of is that the motor is turning the upmp, but the transmission for some reason is in neutral drain so it is not agitating or spinning.

One possible solution would be to replace the timer, but since we cannot be certain that will fix it and since it works in other cycles I would run it in the regular cycle until something else happens.

Not the most elegent solution, but certainly the lowest cost one.
