Please help me diagnose my washer that isn't running

Hello all. Thank you for viewing this post. Here’s the issue we’re having right now with our washing machine.

Yesterday, the washing machine filled with water just fine (was doing a full load so it filled pretty much to the top).

I noticed the timer seemed to be "buzzing" a little more loudly than usual. Once the washing machine was filled with water the cycle didn’t advance (as in, no agitation, etc.)

I tried unplugging the washer and gave it a few minutes but nothing happened. A couple of times the timer has sounded like it started again, but only for a minute or two (buzzing, clicking, etc.)

I noticed yesterday that I could faintly smell a little bit of burnt electrical smell - but today that smell is absent.

Right now the washer is completely full of water, it won’t agitate, spin, and advancing the timer to get it to drain isn’t working either.

I pulled out the timer to visually inspect it and it seems fine, but I can really only see the electrical contacts.

Anywho, please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

Thanks!

Sounds like the lid safety switch may have failed … Id check that switch is not damaged and check for contennuity when the switch is depressed

Thanks for the tip - that’s what I was thinking as well. Any thoughts on trying to get the washer to drain? Is it even possible? I can’t get the washer out right now to get to the back of it.

Thanks so much!

First thing I would do is bail the water out by hand using a bucket … Then the top of the washer can be hinged back by depressing two clips with a puddie knife between the top and the front panel … Once the top is lifted the lid safety switch is accessable for inspection … From there you can remove remove the front panel by pulling two 5/16 screws at the top left and right corners … The panel will then lift straight up and the pump and motor will be accessable for inspection

Thanks for the help. I got the lid switch replaced because the part was cheap enough I figured it would be a worthwhile investment. Unfortunately, that did not fix the problem. I’m going to steal some information from another forum to describe what mine is doing because the problem is almost identical. Near as I can tell this person never got a resolution to their problem:

"It will fill on any cycle…Delicate, pp and regular…when tub is filled it hums…then motor trips from overheating after 10-15 secs and you wait 10-15 minutes to retry.

Now comes the strange part…if you stop during the "hum" and turn and pull about 5-8 times it will start on agitation and run normally…then after the wash it goes to spin and then hums again…I push in the knob and turn and pull and if still humming I repeat…finally after a few more "searches" for it to work on spin it will normally. After the first spin completes, humming again. I push knob in and turn and check for a rinse cycle on any setting that will make it work. Finally I stop at a rinse and it works again normally.

To sum it up, it works fine when it I find a "magic" spot and then after that completes it hums. It seems that the motor is fine and trans and pulleys are fine."

I guess my question is what are my next steps?

Almost sounds to me like a classic timer problem … If Its workin in some spots and not others they maybe a short inside the timer … A bad timer will also give you that humming sound you explained … I would suggest replacing it … Keep me posted on what you find out
