Ram won't go down

My Mother’s trash compactor started acting up. The ram won’t go down, though the worm drives on either side are spinning. There is a type of noise that sounds like the ram isn’t lined up properly. I inspected the entire system and can’t seem to figure out the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
